Orvieto is located almost dead-center in Italy, and is situated on the flat summit of a large volcanic hill. The city rises dramatically above the almost vertical faces of the cliffs that end in defensive walls built from the same volcanic stone. The only access to the city is via a tram you take from the main road, which probably accounts for it not being a familiar tourist spot; but trust me, if you're in Italy this is a place you shouldn't miss. The white wine of Orvieto is highly prized, and red wines are also grown. This gorgeous little town has many restaurants, and a specialty dish here is truffle pasta (see the luncheon photo with a dear friend who accompanied us on the trip). I could go on and on about Orvieto: definitely a pleasant surprise on our trip through Italy. Enjoy the pictures!!
